Location on map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2o95Tm3LcVNeG9mEA Mantignana is a hamlet of the municipality of Corciano (PG). With 2053 inhabitants it represents one of the most populous hamlets in the Corciano area (Istat data, 2001 [1]). The town is located at 252 m above sea level, in the Càina valley, approximately 6 km away by road from the main town. History The remains of a villa and an agricultural production area date back to Roman times. Studying the toponymy, the ending "ana" indicates that the area belonged to an agricultural activity derived from the Roman world in the Middle Ages. As early as 1038, there is evidence of a parish church of Santa Maria, around which the town developed, and a church of San Martino (formerly part of the monastery of Santa Croce di Fonte Avellana), now lost. From the late 13th century, official documents mention a Mantignane villa, which later appeared fortified in two separate castles in 1380: castrum Mantignane superioris and castrum Mantignane inferioris. In 1364 it was attacked by the "White Company" of the Marquis Giovanni di Monferrato, while in 1384 the company of Giovanni Acuto took up quarters there together with the Azzo degli Ubaldini. It experienced further tormented events at the end of the 15th century, with the disputes between the Florentines and the papacy (1479) and the occupation of Astorre Baglioni (1496). During the period of the communes and papal rule, the town was connected to Perugia, while during Napoleon's rule in 1798, it became a municipality along with Capocavallo and Migiana. With the Restoration of 1809, it was associated with the municipality of Corciano, with which it remained even after the Risorgimento. Monuments and places of interest Remains of the castle, with the truncated tower and one of the two remaining gates. A new wall was built in the 14th century and was then partially demolished in the late 19th century for residential purposes; Church of the Madonna del Carmine (late 16th century); Oratory of the Madonna della Pietà (now a farmhouse); Church of Santa Maria Assunta; Remains of the church of San Martino (12th century); Church of San Giovanni (14th century); Church of Sant'Andrea (14th century). Economy and events In 1957, a Cassa Rurale ed Artigiana (Rural and Artisan Bank) was founded there, later renamed Banca di Mantignana. This institution is still operational today and is one of the few formally independent Umbrian credit institutions. Among other economic activities, industrial-scale baking and road sign production are thriving. Every year, at the end of March, the Umbrian Easter Cake Festival takes place, featuring a savory cake typical of Umbrian cuisine, particularly from Perugia. Furthermore, during the Christmas holidays, a nativity scene, much loved in the surrounding area, is set up in the historic center.
